Department of Education

Overview

The department has been educating teachers for school system since 1932. The B.Ed. programme that commenced in the year 1952 has been recognized by NCTE http://ncte-india.org/ncte_new/.  The B.Ed. (Special Education) part of the Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, started in the year 2007. The B.Ed. Special Education programme is recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) http://rehabcouncil.nic.in/ . The Department of Education, Lady Irwin College is also a part of Faculty of Education, University of Delhi http://doe.du.ac.in/.

The focus includes various facets, viz. skill training in teaching, mastery of classroom management techniques, competence to handle children with special needs, ability to establish warm interpersonal relationships within the class, development of communication skills and competencies leading to reflective thinking, expertise in various Home Science and Science related work experience, sensitization to community needs, skill in construction and appraisal of various evaluation devices, and development of instructional materials. The close interaction between students and teachers and the participatory nature of the programme enables the students to gain confidence and self-reliance, permitting students to manage their own affairs in a democratic ethos. The programme cultivates leadership qualities and positive virtues like co-operation, sincerity and dedication. In keeping pace with the speed at which knowledge is generated and applied, the emphasis is on ‘learning how to learn’. The students are conversant with newer technologies and competent to use multi-media instructional strategies including e- boards/ interactive boards. The alumnae cherish memories of the fruitful year spent at the department. The B. Ed. Special Education (MR) focuses upon preparation of teachers for the mainstream inclusive schools as well as special schools.

Mission

The Department strives to prepare professional educators who would have the disposition and skills to critically reflect on and learn from their practice and be competent to address the needs of rapidly changing society in democratic and socially just ways. The ethos of the department is to nurture caring teachers who would be responsive to diverse learners and communities and adopt equitable, inclusive and transformatory educational practices and continue to learn across their careers.

Objectives

The Department of Education strives to prepare students who would be leaders in their classrooms, effective practitioners in their field, and lifelong learners.

To this end, the objectives of the Department of Education are to enable the prospective teachers to:

  • Appreciate the historical legacy and cultural diversity of India and infer its implication for shaping the aims and processes of education.
  • Develop an understanding of individual variations.
  • Develop sensitivity towards children with special needs and competencies to provide differential intervention for inclusive education.
  • Strengthen the human and non-human environment for learning and promoting maximum pupil achievement.
  • Encourage effective use of instructional technology to enhance learning.
  • Apply the principles and the knowledge of research to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate instruction.
  • Become a reflective practitioner and an action researcher.
  • Prepare students for effective leadership roles in school and education institutions.
  • Develop an understanding of the pedagogical processes and critical issues related to the teaching learning.

Placements

At the end of each session a placement meet is organized in the department where graduating teacher interns of B.Ed. and B.Ed. Special Education are interviewed and interact with their future employers. Nearly 25-30 schools come to select teachers for their institutions. An encouraging trend of even having 2 to 3 jobs to choose from has been observed.

Internships
  • Students of B.Ed. as a part of their School Experience Programme (SEP) were placed in sixteen Government, Government Aided and Private Schools for a total of 20 weeks, i.e., two weeks in the first year and for 18 weeks in the second year as an essential part of their curriculum.
  • Ed special education students also as a part of their School Experience Programme (SEP) were placed in 12 Special and Inclusive Schools for a total of 120 days as an essential part of their curriculum.
Summer Internships

The department has valuable linkages with various government, developmental organizations including non-Government organizations (NGOs) and bilateral organizations, media houses and even corporate organizations. With an endeavor to provide hands-on learning and refining their professional skill set, the department facilitates internships for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Every year Summer Internship is organized for B.Ed. First year students in national and international NGO’s as a part of the community outreach programme. The students have been involved with various NGO’s viz. working in the area of health, education, social issues, education varying from Early Childhood Education, Adolescence Education, Education of Women and Children living in slums, education of children of craftsmen and several other areas during the month of May -June-July in different development, media and corporate organizations.

Disability Day Event

Each year the students of B. Ed. Special Education conduct sensitization and awareness creating activities on World Disability Day. Posters and pamphlets regarding the nature, roles and instructional strategies regarding different disabilities are prepared by the students and are displayed across the college. Person of eminence are also invited to interact with the students of the department of education.

Development of Entrepreneurship skills (Diwali Mela)

For the annual Diwali Mela the students prepare innovative articles (SUPW) to be exhibited in the festival. This is a highly awaited activity of the department and faculty and students from the college flock to savor delicious food on sale and purchase hand made products to brighten up their homes. This exercise of organizing mela’s hones the students’ skills of event management as well.

Organizing Exhibitions and campaigns

Each year the students of the department organize various campaigns and exhibitions. Some of the exhibitions which the students work on from the beginning to its final presentation includes: Home Science and science exhibitions consisting of audio video aids such as kits , models, charts, flannel boards, toons, puppets, educational toys and games etc.

Teaching Learning materials and resource room development and Exhibition

As a part of the course the students are trained in the art of preparing diverse teaching learning material. These range from graphic teaching aids like charts, flannels, flip books to models, power points, CAL, movies and mobiles. Students also develop science and home science kits, educational games. Students of Department organize exhibitions of these products and other resource materials.

  1. 13 days self-defense training course for “Safety of Women and Children” was organized by the Delhi Police in collaboration with the Department of Education, Lady Irwin College from 23rd July 2019 to 9th August 2019.
  2. Two special lectures were organized on 6th September, 2019 on “National Education Policy, 2019” by Prof. Namita Ranganathan, Department of Education, University of Delhi & “Importance of self-defense for girls” by ACP Sashibala Kaushik
  3. Special Lecture on “Constitutional Provisions for Education in India” by Dr. Rama Murti Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, University of Delhi conducted on 11th September 2019
  4. Workshop on “Indian Sign Language” in collaboration with Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) was organized on 25th September 2019 and 27th September 2019 to celebrate the International week of the Deaf.
Activities of the Department
  1. Orientation Programme for the first-year students was organized by the Department of Education on 26th August 2019
  2. As a part of School Experience Programme I (SEP I), first year students visited Gandhi Smriti on 29th August, 2019. The aim was to orient students about the ideology, his life and contribution of Mahatma Gandhi towards the country.
  3. Teachers’ day celebration & Investiture Ceremony held on 6th September, 2019. The event was organized by the faculty & students of Department of Education. The chief guest for the occasion was Prof. Namita Ranganathan, Department of Education, University of Delhi & ACP Sashibala Kaushik.
  4. Visit to National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum on 12th September 2019 & 19th September 2019. Students were oriented about the different galleries in the museum and workshop was conducted by the artisans where students learnt about different paintings including madhubani painting, miniature painting, warli art painting and gond painting.
  5. Visit to National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) was organized for B.Ed. First Year students on 26th September 2019.

Value added courses
Self Defence Training Course for B.Ed. Second Year Students on ‘‘Safety of Women and Children’’ was organized from July 23, 2019 -August 09,2019 by Delhi Police (Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi District)
Department with Delhi States Bharat Scouts and Guides organized a 30-hr online value-added course for B.Ed. Second Year Students on Disaster Management from March 22, 2021 to March 26, 2021.

 

Skill enhancement activities
Reflective Teaching Classroom Practices (2018-2021)
This workshop is specifically designed for second year students who have learnt/ given an exam in the Pedagogy of Science and Home Science courses in the first year and also complete their School Experience Programme (SEP) in the second year.
This workshop enables them to reflect on their classroom experiences during SEP and also appreciate practices.
Home Science/ Science Enrichment programme (2018-2021)
This programme focuses on the content of Home Science and Science which needs to be updated to enable the student teacher to teach ‘‘correct’’ content in the areas. This supports students understanding of current trends, life skills and planning, managing in execution of classroom activities efficiently.
Research Activities (2018-2021)
Students of B.Ed. first year are involved in action-oriented research work throughout the academic session with their tutorial group supervisors respectively. And also present and submit their final report.

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – Implementing the Reform: A case study of Delhi (2012)

The study was undertaken by the Department in its endeavor to get a field view on the reform of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, which has been implemented by CBSE. This work was completed with the active collaboration of the faculty.
