Nutrition Garden- Horticulture Project

About

Adequate nutrition is a fundamental requirement of any individual. Girls, who are the future of the society, generally tend to be relatively more undernourished. The aim of the Nutrition Garden- Horticulture Projectis to promote nutrition and healthy lifestyle awareness and actions leading to behavioural change of the students. It holds the potential to contribute towards nutritional security of students and staff of the college. With systematic planning and management continuous availability of fruits and vegetables is made round the year.Winter as well as summer annual vegetables are grown along with perennial vegetables and fruits. There is a section maintained for growing herbs in the Nutrition garden. These herbs have medicinal properties. The horticultural produce is free from pesticide residue. The horticultural waste generated on the field is successfully made into compost and utilised further. The horticulture project is contributing towards the sustainable improvement of nutrition of students and staff.

Objectives

The college campus utilises a significant portion of its space to sustain the possible floral and faunal biodiversity. The objective is to use the land to grow seasonal vegetables and fruits and at the same time maintain the green cover of the college. The foundational principle behind the Nutrition Garden is to complement the classroom teaching in Natural Sciences with the on-field exposure of the same. The produce of the field also offers the college members a regular supply of organically grown vegetables.It not only caters the nutritional requirements,micro and macro elements both to students and staff alike but also contributes in sustaining the environment.

Features

  • The fruits, flowers and vegetables allow for a rich diversity of fauna to prosper in the campus. The different calls of the birds are a treat to the ears of the observant
    individuals
  • There is a section for growing herbs in the Nutrition garden. These herbs have medicinal properties
  • The Students learn the principles of nursery management, by participating and further applying the same
  • Students are educated to value the plants and are involved in the multiplication of small potted foliage plants
  • The composting of the leaves and other biodegradable products is done in specifically designed pits, thereby recycling the waste to keep the practice operate in a selfsustaining mode
  • Culture is inextricably entwined with the concept of nature and its conservation.
    Celebration of Baisakhi and other such festivals allow understanding of crop cycles to the students
  • The rich foliage of herbs, shrubs and trees have allowed for a diversified niche  development for the fauna too. Enthusiast minds can find a good diversity of insects, birds (both resident and migratory ones), mammalian species prospering in the campus
  • The college is situated at the busiest centre of Delhi, near the ITO. The rich foliage  acts as an efficient filter to the pollution, both air and noise alike, maintaining an oasis like existence for its inmates
  • The lessons learnt from the field is efficiently amplified as nutrition garden gets
    created by students at their homes also
